- City Hall Park used to be called the New York Common

- Liberty pole was set up on the common which was constantly attacked by British soldiers
- The Liberty Pole was put up by the Sons of Liberty to express the desire for liberty and the defiance to the acts of Parliament
- There were several liberty poles put up by the Sons of Liberty around 1776
- When the soldiers took down a pole the people would construct a new one and put into place again

The liberty pole was a symbol that colonists and British soldiers fought over. Can you think of other symbols that people have fought or argued over - in the past or present?
ReplyDeleteAfter reading about the Liberty Pole(s) so much in our homework readings, I'm glad I got to see where it actually stood! Trying to imagine a long pole sticking out of the ground in the middle of the park is funny, with all the tall skyscrapers around today; but the Liberty Pole must have been pretty tall, even if it wasn't taller than the buildings, and a strong symbol for the colonists' liberty.
ReplyDeleteResearching about City Hall Park/Commons and the Liberty Pole, the park seemed much more beautiful in the pictures rather than artsy. When we went to the park I was surprised to see the abstract art presented and the immense amount of people having lunch in the park. I thought it was a place for marriage or elegant affairs but it turns out it is a place for community to gather just as it was in history. Being able to actually see the site of the Liberty Pole and gathering place for the colonists to discuss their defiance to the British was really cool! We got to eat in a place that was a huge part of history which was even cooler.
ReplyDeleteI found the liberty pole interesting because it showed how much the colonists wanted their freedom and how persistent they were even though the British did everything they could to stop them. It was interesting to see where it once stood. I also liked how they incorporated modern art in such a historical park.
