Fort George/Customs House

  • Was Fort Amsterdam under Dutch rule
  • Renamed Fort George under British
  • Was target of Stamp Act protests
  • Later became site of US Customs House for NY harbor
  • Today is Museum of the Native American - see irony?

    A pre-tour challenge: can you guess what is the irony of locating the Native American Museum where the fort used to be?
    Why not take a guess? (The answer will be revealed during the tour.)

    I'm glad we visited Fort George because it holds so much irony. The irony shown at this stop is that the people of NYC used to treat the Native Americans awfully, but now they have a museum for them. The area near this stop was beautiful and full of life.
